We are Northern Lights; a mixed A Cappella group from Durham University, about to embark on our 11th year as a group!
We are thrilled to say that we won the 2023 UK semi-final of the International Championship of Collegiate A Cappella (ICCA), held at the New Wimbledon Theatre in London, for the first time in Northern Lights’ history. We had the privilege of representing the UK in the sold-out final at The Town Hall in New York on the 29th April 2023, alongside the top nine a cappella groups from across the UK, US and Canada.
Last academic year, amidst competition preparation, we’ve featured in a Vocal Room episode, linked below, produced by the AC Product, which has amassed 6 thousand views and counting. We also put on a successful showcase around Christmas at Collingwood’s Mark Hillery Performance Space and headlined Music Durham’s ‘A Cappella at the Gala’ show, featuring Durham’s 4 finest a cappella choirs. We are so excited to see what the Generation 11 of Northern Lights has to come!

We have just released our debut album 'Meet Me In The Sky' on all streaming platforms, and have enjoyed a sold our run of our A Cappella showcase 'Northern Light's 10th B'day Bash!' at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival 2023.

During the last academic year, we also won the Open A Cappella competition, and we were honoured to receive 4 CARA (Contemporary A Cappella Recording) award nominations for our ICCA Set 2022, which we released as an EP on Spotify and Apple music in September 2022.

Northern Lights is formed with the stated intention of being a close and supportive environment, and pride ourselves on our ethos 'One entity, One voice' Although we are all driven members who constantly wish to improve the quality of our sound and performance, we are also a tight-knit group of friends who just love performing together. The fact that we have all developed such close friendships through A Cappella allows us to perform to a higher standard and this is something we are immensely proud of.

As a group, we also get invited to perform at all kinds of events, from weddings and corporate functions to balls where our average audience is 200-300 people.
